Lithography Explained: 50+ Years of Dedication by Wayne Kimball

2025-01-22

Description:

An inside look at the lithographer's studio, his granite slabs, and what it takes to dedicate your life to an artform.

Additional Backstory

I've thought about making this video for about 5 years now, but tracking down Wayne's contact info proved to be difficult. All the stars aligned and he was gracious enough to accept a call from me. The last time Wayne saw me I was a buck-toothed 14 year old with braces, so I had to jam over a decade's worth of catch-up into a 10 minute phone call to explain that I make videos now -- and wanted to film him in his studio.

Wayne's skilled hands sketching on a slab of granite, soon to be pressed onto multiple copies of the artwork.

By the end of our hour and a half of filming in his studio, he was just comfortable enough to let me get that intimate shot of him staring down the barrel of the camera. After I packed up my gear and turned to head out the door, he handed me the lithograph featured in the video: "A Rather Surly Chap Versus Troublesome Birds". I hope you can see some of the incredible texture and color in the close-up below. Lithography scratches something in my artist brain that inspires me to elevate my work.

Months later, when I visited his studio one more time to show him the video I made, he responded with "I need to show my daughter this! She'll be pleased as punch...and puke! Or something!"

I couldn't ask for higher praise from the man. Using talents I have accrued to tell a friend's story was a fulfilling endeavor. I hope to continue documenting life beautifully, and share interesting/uplifting stories with the world. (And I hope that you do too.)
